Drugs in Your Drinking Water: There Are Chemicals from Pharmaceuticals, Personal Care Products (PPCPs),and Artificial Sweeteners in Drinking Water

These chemicals and compounds are the greatest challenge to any water system.

Many of these lifesaver Pharmaceuticals find there way into drinking water, usually in trace amounts (ppt). Artificial Sweeteners in Drinking Water are being found; however, a threat level has not been established by the US EPA. Ongoing testing and new testing methods have not led to any conclusions as to PPCPs in Drinking Water. PPCPs in Drinking Water are constantly an issue and one of growing concern. While PPCPs are found in very low levels in drinking water, there is a concern of possible cumulative effects of long-term exposure.

While most PPCPs are known compounds, they may react in ways that are different from their intended purpose once they are introduced into the environment.

PPCPs can be introduced into the environment in several ways, including:

-Flushing unused medications down the toilet or sink
-Rinsing personal hygiene and household cleaning products down the drain
-Excreting unabsorbed medications into the sewage system
-Farm animals excreting veterinary drugs, including hormones and antibiotics,  into fields where they run off into lakes and streams
    -Commercial improper disposal methods

Technologies under investigation include membranes which physically remove compounds and ozone or UV which break them down.

UV irradiation has shown that the technique may be effective at destroying a variety of hormones, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals, that are now commonly found in our drinking water sources and in our Wastewater.

Membrane water ultrafiltration is a ways off as an answer to the PPCPs in drinking water. The testing required to pass US EPA scrutiny is costly. Don't look for an answer any time soon.

There are at least 2500 chemicals that fall in the class of PPCPs. All drinking water filters claim to remove some of the PPCPs in drinking water. If you are concerned about PPCPs in your drinking water you will have to query several drinking water filter manufactures and request information on the PPCPs their systems remove. Pick 2 filter systems and maybe you can remove some of the PPCPs in you drinking water.
